Our parliament is made up of 543+ MPs who directly represent us and influence laws that rule our lives. Yet, during Lok Sabha elections, we stay obsessed with national political leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi. The reality is that there is no single political leader who can magically transform the country. If we keep electing MPs and MLAs who are incompetent and corrupt, the system will stay broken. So before you vote for your favourite party or leader, do consider who (the specific MP) you are sending to the Lok Sabha.
Here is a list of the worst of the worst of the outgoing Lok Sabha.
MPs in the above table fall in the bottom 25 percentile in each of the following areas:
- Attendance in the Lok Sabha (average for MP’s analyzed was 80%)
- Questions asked in the Lok Sabha (average for MP’s analyzed was 293)
- Participation in Debates in the Lok Sabha (average for MP’s analyzed was 67)
- Amount of money released by the Government of India for MPLAD i.e. development projects in the MP’s constituency (average for MP’s analyzed was ~Rupees 20.68 crore)
- Additionally, we have also included criminal information (based on affidavits submitted in 2014) and number of private member bills introduced.
The MPs analyzed only included MPs who are currently in office and were sworn-in in 2014. MPs who are ministers were not included in the analysis.
So make sure you are aware of how your current representative has served (or not served you). And don’t forget to visit MyNeta.Info before you vote to help you make an informed voting choice.
