Why should we accept ‘criminal’ Kejriwal?

ArvindKejriwalOver the last two years, Arvind Kejriwal has been on a crusade to bring about societal reforms. Throughout this period, Kejriwal has consistently expressed his disdain towards parliamentarians who have pending criminal cases against them. On many occasions in the recent past, Kejriwal and his coterie  often harped on the presence of criminals in parliament in order to demonstrate the magnitude of political rot being faced by the country. For instance, in February 2012, Kejriwal said“In this Parliament, 163 members have cases of heinous offences against them. In this Parliament, rapists are sitting, murderers and looters are sitting. How can you expect Jan Lokpal Bill to be passed by Parliament? How can you expect that you can get reprieve from poverty and corruption”. During this period Kejriwal along with Hazare were engaging in an incredible amount of rhetoric with a subliminal message that said – ‘trust us, not your gunda netas’. Incidentally, even before Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was created, Kejriwal was comfortable leaving his apolitical stance to attack the Congress. This was most apparent in the Hissar by-elections when Kejriwal/Hazare openly exhorted voters to defeat the Congress even if this translated into a ‘criminal’ neta winning.

Today, Kejriwal is on the cusp of reaching parliament himself. His AAP has fielded candidates across Delhi for the imminent assembly elections. Here is what Kejriwal said in March 2012 about the BJP and Congress giving tickets to ‘criminals’ – “Why did these parties gave ticket to such people? What were the compulsions? Didn’t they insult Parliament by doing so? Can’t these parties be punished for this?”According to a recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms on the upcoming Delhi elections, 5 (7%) out of 70 candidates from AAP have serious criminal cases pending against them. Kejriwal is one of these five candidates. Purely in terms of relative comparison to other parties, AAP has given far fewer ‘criminals’ tickets to contest. The numbers are 11% for Congress and a whopping 32% for BJP. However, these stats show that AAP has essentially sunk to the same low standards that Kejriwal was accusing other parties of. Across the country, tickets are distributed by parties to candidates who have the maximum chance of winning. These chances are typically boosted by money power and muscle power. AAP seems to have fallen into the same trap. There is no argument that can be made to say that an AAP candidate’s pending case is less malignant than that of a candidate of BJP or Congress.  The advent of AAP may seem revolutionary to many but the truth is that every political party has origins in samaj sewa and societal reform. A truly revolutionary party may have risked losing an election for its cause. At this point, it’s hard to imagine AAP truly performing something miraculous even though the internet hype would convince you otherwise.

  1. You are correct…we shouldn’t vote fr Arvind..we should vote fr someone who is richer than queen Elizabeth…right??

      1. Wah Sarkar : Are you Bloody Congress Butt Licker or BJPee ?? Fake Supari Journos like you would have got the answer by now.. So keep your Filthy Pimp mouth shut.

    1. Please go to the website to be sure. The only reason u feel AAP has done flip flops because its transparent and u can actually see what is happening inside the party. What abt bjp and congress?

      1. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. If we criticize BJP/Cong for being flip-flopitty we can say the same for AAP w/o getting emotionally distressed.

  2. Great Mouthpiece for BJP + Congress combine..BTW, the cases againsts AAP are for protesting the Electricity Bill Hike, protesting ill-treatment of Autodrivers by Delhi Police-wallahs, protesting for justice in the Nirbhaya & Gudiya rape case..Unlike BJP + Congress combine where land sharks / rapists / Mafioso grt preference in Tickets

  3. Only if you bothered to check what the cases are. To protest for providing justice to the girl that was raped in delhi. To protest in front of the prime minister’s and sonia gandhi’s residence. And dont speak like you know more than the public. You run another paid website who takes money to defame someone. Admit it you cant digest the fact that some better is here and u cant stand the change. Dont bother to give me your bullshit reply now. I dun care what comea out of that mouth of urs.

    1. Every politician in this country with pending criminal cases makes the same arguments. Either cases are fabricated or are justified because they were done for public service.Incidentally, every year the ‘public’ elects crime accused to parliament including every BJP and Congress parliamentarian you loathe. So that argument just bit you in the ass. So it’s understandable for you to be scared of a response to your flimsy arguments.

      1. oh for christ sake check their website. scared of the reply? a reply from you? oh yeah i was scared of a response by a wanna be ‘expert’ who knows shit about anything but keeps blabbing with half the truth. remember the incident when the whole ‘team anna’ was in the news and how the media covered the incident of them going to a court and denying for bail.? well those are the charges on arvind. go file a RTI for this. you’ll know. one person stands up to help and hundereds stand up acting like they are better than him.

        1. don’t need to file an RTI. Details are submitted to the EC in self-sworn affidavits. You can keep looking at AAP through rose-tinted glasses, everyone else doesn’t. Every political party needs to be subjected to the same level of scrutiny. AAP is a political party, not a god-created infallible entity. It’s a reality that you should face. Of course you can defend them with illogical rhetoric, since they are just another political party and that’s what pol parties do.

  4. At first, i felt that you were missing the point and the focus was too narrow. And the reasons were the same as mentioned in some of the comments here. The difference in the crime, the reason behind the crime and maybe to some extent sabotage by the existing government.

However, after thinking about it for sometime, what you say does make sense. If they are willing to go against one of their principle ideals, whatever the reason, then tomorrow they may compromise on other ideals as well and they will always have “reasons” to justify their actions at that time as well.

    1. Yes. It is a matter of principle. Maybe a truly revolutionary party would accept political losses and stick to its guns. At least on the evidence shown so far, AAP is not such a party. The ”reasons” you mention form a very pertinent point. Every political party across the land has these ”reasons” for criminals in parliament. These range from falsified crimes to crimes committed for the betterment of society.

Another point is that cases against AAP candidates are not all recent ones made by the govt. Haven’t gone through all affidavits, but here are 2 examples:

      1) Gopal Rai (Babarpur) – charges framed in 1999 . Here is a scanned copy of his self-sworn affidavit -http://ceodelhi.gov.in/…/4-GOPAL%20RAI/IMAGES/3%20001.jpg

      2) Rajesh Garg (Rohini) – charges framed in 2006 & 2010 – Here is a scanned copy of his self-sworn affidavit -http://ceodelhi.gov.in/…/20-RAJESH…/IMAGES/RAJ%203.jpg

    2. and in a sense what you are saying is what precisely happened in the Delhi assembly when AAP made an alliance with the Congress – a party they were morally opposed to – in order to come into power.

  5. AAP is political party who get much supports within this sort time span, that means some thing is there in this party. The ability to bring the black money in our country and of course Jan Lokpal Bill. So why we hesitate to vote for a clean leader supporting another parties??

    Support AAP Odisha

    1. Sure, by all means support any leader from any party. But let’s not be hypocritical and pick and choose only non-AAP leaders to criticize and scrutinize.

  6. Former Union Minister, Venod Sharma congratulated Narendra Modi and wished him best of luck as Prime Minister of the country. Venod Sharma quit the Congress and recently join BJP for developing country.
