What do we mean by Empowerment of Women?

A great deal has been said over the last few months about the pathetic status of women in India. A study done last year showed that India is the worst country to be a woman in among G20 nations. How can we empower women in the country? People seem to have very different versions about what we truly need to do.

Here’s a hypothetical situation. Say we are in 2030. According to you, which of the following would be representative of an empowered Indian woman…

  1. More than what men do or not do to women, I think it’s time women drop their goodie two shoes act and start behaving well with their own sex.  Women need to start respecting themselves and each other and not listen to what every second person has to offer in the name of advice. Instead of whining and crying as depicted in popular soaps and films, she should take up measures to help herself (how about self-defense) because obviously, nobody else will.

  2. women would be truly empowered when they would come to have faith and confidence in themselves and the vast potential that lay dormant in each one of the them. they will have to learn to bend the rules of society to their advantage and march forward unhindered. Its time they awaken to themselves and their rights. No outside force can help them truly achieve this. they can only offer support but the ultimate onus lies on women themselves to tae up this challenge and quash the age old theories and practices that work against them…its time to act for your own sake….
