Why do we elect rape-accused to parliament?

Jaya Bachchan, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Samajwadi Party had an emotional breakdown earlier this week as she was shaken and shattered by the gruesome Delhi rape incident. Her teary-eyed speech in the Rajya Sabha and passionate statements thereafter got extensive media coverage.

However, Bachchan’s Samajwadi Party currently leads the country in having MLAs who are accused of rape. Perhaps Mrs. Bachchan could start by reforming her own party by not allowing the party to provide tickets to rapists to contest elections.

In addition, the fact that these candidates were able to win elections shows that the general public in India is not averse to voting for a rape accused. It may be one thing to go on a few candle marches and express solidarity on social-media, however in many parts of the country the electorate allows such candidates to thrive and come into positions of power.

Besides rape, the country’s elected elite also seem to enjoy eve teasing and assaulting women. Apart from the lists above, 38 other MLAs/MPs have charges of crimes against women such as outraging the modesty of a woman, assault, insulting the modesty of a woman etc. Of these 6 MLAs are from the Congress, 5 from BJP and 3 from Samajwadi Party.

Are we ever going to truly fight rape in this country if we continue to elect parliamentarians who are accused of heinous crimes against women?

  1. we elect rape accused because they have been seleted by our national lraders like , sonia & co maya & co,, sushma & co, . these leaders and their parties are responsible

  2. That is short and to the point..thankyou! however, the majority of voters do not have access to this kind of information as we do, i’m referring to the country that is still struggling for daily comforts.. I say comforts because roti, kapda, makaan as basic need is outfashioned. Now we struggle to be able to show off, own gadgets, visit malls and do many other silly things. Helping the nation grow has not been the agenda at all.. they say..what about my own house huh?
The point is, the awakening is still a long way to go, and categorizing rape as a hideous crime in all their heads is longer.
The current parliament generation is obviously dim, their successors (read sons/daughters) are even worse, I wonder how we will be able to push our way into this ignorant crowd and  make ourselves heard, cause you know.. they are deaf, partially blind and mentally dumb.

    1. @b6a5f2f3dc96b540da7d025c204e6b7c:disqus  True. Maybe  grass root level organizations and regional media could potentially scale up efforts in educating rural voters. There are also incidents like this one – https://www.wahsarkar.com/2011/11/the-impotent-rapist/ which will never get as much attention.
But the onus lies more on the political parties which technically exist for public good. They themselves who could refrain from handing out tickets to such candidates. Hopefully we can soon get laws which force them to abide by this.

  3. all lider who involed in rap case .wright now GOVT show us power and resticat or throw out from the parlimet those who involved in rap case.maybe we get  tity relif or blive on govt disions.

  4. We must be the change we wish to see, and the first step I guess would be to replace the ruling party and even the opposition.

It’s really a pitiful state, I don’t think pre-independence also we were this poor. Poor in terms of  security for women and children.

    Good Article..

  5. A very serious issue you raised here, On the news channel TIMES NOW,  Arnab Goswami committed that they would relay the names of such politicians every week, Almost every party have issued tickets to the rapist. Just hope they all wake up and take an action. But yes, we do need to remember this while voting.
