Humara Neta… Abu Salem

Last week saw the death of the world’s most dreaded terrorist, Osama bin Laden. But do you know what happened when one of India’s most wanted, Abu Salem, was  arrested and put behind bars in 2006? He wanted to contest assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and amazingly there was no law in the country to stop him from doing so.

Sitting in jail in 2006, Abu Salem was accused in the 1993 Bombay blasts, the murder of Gulshan Kumar and in an assortment of murder & other criminal cases. So Abu Salem decided to do what any hardened criminal in India would do. He thought of the one place where he would always be welcome. The one place where no one could touch him. The one place where he would feel at home. He thought of joining Indian Politics.

To be fair to Salem, Indian Politics is a sanctuary for criminals. Almost every third MP in the Lok Sabha has pending criminal cases and the current UP Assembly has close to 140 MLAs with pending criminal cases. Thus it was only natural for Salem to look towards the one place where criminals party 24X7 and fill their pockets with ill gotten money (something Salem already was an expert at).

In the middle of this drama, India’s then Chief Election Commissioner, N.Gopalaswamy, wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh imploring him to initiate long pending electoral reforms. Here is a copy of the letter:

Chief Election Commissioner’s letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

The letter went on to stress on the ”lurking danger” of the likes of Abu Salem and Dawood Ibrahim becoming MPs or MLAs.

Salem was set to contest from the constituency of Mubarakpur. But unfortunately for him, his international business had kept him out of India for too long and his name was missing from the electoral roll.

The laws for contesting elections in India remain the same despite numerous efforts by civil society and the election commission. Maybe someday in the near future Indian citizens will have the privilege to voter for Abu Salem or Dawood Ibrahim. It’s also probably the right time to start a ‘fast unto death‘ against criminals in parliament. Annaji shuru karo… hum tumhare saath hai..
